Dividing Heads (often called indexing heads) are machine tools used to provide controlled and repeatable rotation to a tool or workpiece, usually as an accessory to a milling machine, grinder, or lathe. A classic and personal favorite of in our machine shop is the Ellis Dividing Head, but you can also find a different manufacturers dividing head that would fit …
On a B&S Universal Dividing Head you use an 18 hole index circle.Disengage the dividing head spindle from the worm.Make sure the dividing head spindle turns freely. Now you have to gear the the dividing head spindle to the dividing head worm. Add a 40 tooth gear on the spindle and make sure you have the key back in place.
Dividing Head Formula With a 40:1 gear ratio, you'd need to turn the crank on the dividing head 40 full turns to rotate the workpiece once. To get 6 equal divisions, you'd need 40/6 = 6+2/3 = 6.66666 turns. The 6 turns are easy, …
A dividing head, or indexing head, is a machine tool attachment that allows a work piece to be rotated in precise, pre-determined increments for machining of repeated profiles. A dividing head is generally used as an accessory on milling machines to machine any product consisting of several equal radial facets.
Unfortunely this flange has a 13 hole bolt pattern; but fortunately we have a dividing head mounted on our drill press or milling machine table: 40/13 = 3 and 1/13. Or in other words, 3 turns of the crank plus 1/13th of a turn per division.
As the milling machine dividing disc with holes limited, some of the division number because there is no suitable hole ring, and can not be simple dividing method, such as 73, 83, 113 and so on.

Install the Dividing Plate 1. Slide the dividing plate onto the shaft. 2. Secure it with two socket head cap screws. 3. Place the flat spring in the groove in the dividing plate hub. 4. Put the two sector arms on the dividing plate. 5. Install the retaining nut. 6. Install the crank handle. 7. Reinstall the washer and nut on the end of the shaft.
(remember that all dividing heads are at 40:1 ratio so you need to turn the handle 40 times to produce 360 degrees of movement at the chuck). Listed to the right is all of the common hole plate series with the total number of holes per series …
The general appearance of the machine itself as now made by the firm, is seen in fig. 1. Dividing Headstock & Tailstock for Cincinnati Universal Milling Machine. Headstock & Tailstock in External Elevation. The head and back centre, are shown in the photo fig. 2, while the detail drawings of the head are given in figs. 3, 4, 5.
a) Calculate the gear tooth proportions. Blank diameter = (Z + 2)/DP = (20+2)/10=2.2" or 55.88mm Z = Number of teeth required DP= Diametral Pitch=10 Index crank movement = 40 / Z =2 b) The dividing head and the tail stock are bolted on the machine table. Their axis must be set parallel to the machine table.
METHODS OF CALCULATION. The dividing head used alone finds its applications in fluting taps and reamers, in cutting wheel teeth and ratchet teeth, etc. But for spiral teeth, and for twist drills and spiral milling cutters, …
Dividing Head Calculator. This tool can be used to work out the best plate and number of holes to use on a dividing head. It has two built-in dividing head configurations. Firstly there is the "BS-n Style" for BS-0, BS-1 and BS-2 dividing heads. Secondly there is the Arc Euro Trade style for this style of rotary table / dividing combo head.
The mandrel is then mounted between the centre of the dividing head. A form relieved shaped profile fluting cutter (right-hand) is mounted on the arbor with its largest diameter opposite the spindle (Fig. 16.69). In this way the profile cutter will mill the flute by the conventional or up milling method.
When used as a plain dividing head the dividing plate is locked in position. When used for helical milling the dividing plate is unlocked and can be turned by means of the auxiliary input. Dividing heads that swivel in the horizontal plane. These are very unusual. It would seem that the one thing they can do conveniently is making bevel gears.

Just as I did for my Sebastian treadle lathe, rather than making any permanent, irreversible changes to the Atlas milling machine's plain indexing centers, I made an adapter to enable use of the South Bend lathe's change gears (which mostly have a 9/16ths inch bore) as templates. The adapter consists of a plug closely fit to the bore of the indexing center's spindle and …
Depends on the stuff you do, but I have both and use the dividing head about 5-10X the amount I use the rotary table. The dividing head can be rotated vertical and the lathe chuck attached, with the lathe work still in it. IMO, the rotary table is always a pain to set up, locate center, then somehow clamp the work where you need it.
What is a dividing head used for? An indexing head, also known as a dividing head or spiral head, is a specialized tool that allows a workpiece to be circularly indexed; that is, easily and precisely rotated to preset angles or circular divisions.. What is simple indexing method? To index the work through any required angle, the index crank pin is withdrawn from the hole
Grizzly G1054 - Dividing Head - BS-1. . These high quality dividing heads are made with demanding care for precision gear-cutting, sharpening milling cutters, reamers, etc. Dividing heads come complete with 3 dividing plates, 1 tailstock, 1 chuck back plate, 1 center-dog and 1 center. Thread on nose 1-1/2" x 8 TPI.
A dividing head is indispensable for machining gears on a milling machine, and, when used in conjunction with a universal milling machine (swiveling table), helical gears can be readily machined. In addition, the dividing head makes it possible to easily yet accurately produce special cutting tools.
By Using Dividing Head On Milling Machine For precise longitudinal movement of the table, the dividing head spindle is connected with the machine table lead screw with a 1:1 ratio. So in 40 turns of crank machine table lead screw is revolved a 1 turn and table moves equal to the pitch of the lead screw.

2) Expand milling. Grind the selected keyway milling cutter until its outer diameter is reduced by 0.3-0.5 mm (keep a good cylindricity), when milling, leave 0.5 mm allowance at both ends of the keyway, move the cutter back and forth for milling, and then measure the groove width to determine the width allowance.

Use of Dividing Head. Indexing. It may sometimes become necessary to rotate parts on a milling machine, beyond the rotation offered in some beds (e.g. Universal Milling Machine). Some of the applications that require this capability are milling of : polygons, splines gears, cams spirals Indexing contd. This method can be done with a dividing head.
An indexing head, also known as a dividing head or spiral head, is a specialized tool that allows a workpiece to be circularly indexed; that is, easily and precisely rotated to preset angles or circular divisions.Indexing heads are usually used on the tables of milling machines, but may be used on many other machine tools including drill presses, grinders, and boring machines.
