Plaster for plastering walls is probably worst, very soft, falls apart when prolonged exposure to water. I use casting plaster which is a lot harder, but still not really waterproof. It does hold shape though between grinding and polishing sessions, and doesn't crumble. I do not treat the plaster in any way.
