However, surprisingly, the mirror finished surface with a roughness of about 0.1,!LmRmaxis obtained. Fig. 5(b) shows the same wheel used for generating tooth surfaces just after the plunge grinding. Mirror Finishing by CBN Wheel With No Wear. A roughness curve obtained from the plunge grinding is shown on the right side of Fig. 6. This curve ...

This one has far fewer air bubbles in it than the first prototype did. I had forgotten how much hard work rough grinding is. Gotta build a curve generating machine next. Click the photo for a larger view. Update 01/25/14 I have reached final depth rough grinding on my second generation cellular, honeycomb-back mirror blank at the SPAC Mirror ...
The curve is ground into the mirror face using a grinding tool. The curve is pre-generated for you. The curve is created by slumping the blank in a kiln over a mold. Here are 42 inch [107cm] and 30 inch [762cm] mirrors slumped and annealed to F2.8 ready for fine grinding. The first method is by far the most popular.
The ring ought to be roughly 1/3 to ½ the diameter of the mirror, and grinding center over center strokes with it using large grits, such as 60 grit, will curve generate a mirror. You will have to cast a tool for it when finished. Below is a photo of using a barbell weight on our mirror making machine to curve a 32" f/3.67 mirror to an f/3.1.
The final grinding and polishing take place on the LPM (Large Polishing Machine) located at the north end of the Lab. Although previous mirrors have been completed on the LOG (Large Optical Generator), the LPM has more precise controls that make the final polishing of the mirror surface easier (if that is possible) than the LOG.
Making my own fixed post mirror grinding/polishing . Page 1 of 2Making my own fixed post mirror grinding/polishing machineposted in ATM Optics and DIY Forum Hey guys Im thinking of making my own fixed post mirror grinding/polishing and curve generating machine Ive got loads of questions regarding the design so Ill just start firing away Do I need an …
In this paper some new methods for grinding toroidal mirrors, elliptic and circular cylinder mirrors with large curvature radii are investigated. By using the grinding methods proposed here, we successfully obtain aspheric mirrors made of SiC, with higher precision in shape accuracy and low surface roughness, as R max = 20-40 nm, R a = 2 ~ 5 nm.
Page 2 of 2 - Curve generating - posted in ATM, Optics and DIY Forum: I use a sine table and drill press and diamond hole saw like Dave. My first iteration had the turntable for the mirror just on Teflon to turn. I had to turn it by hand slowly and it left some big generation marks that needed to be removed with a decent amount of 80 grit work.
It is almost impossible for the profile of a new wheel without on-machine precision truing to be a perfect arc curve. The wheel coordinate is established as shown in Fig. 1.The diamond wheel profile curve obtained by measurement can be represented by a series of discrete data points, i.e., the black curve in Fig. 1.First, the envelope spectrum of the wheel …
The DaVinci machine looks like it can only generate concave curves and the radius is determined by the diameter of the grinding wheel. When you use a cylinder and Sine table you can generate any radius you want independent of the cylinder diameter just as long as the diameter of the cylinder is equal or larger then the 1/2 the diameter of the ...
Fig. 2 presents a schematic of the grinding system motion analysis in grinding biconical surface using STS-DGW. The biconical optics is fixed on the workpiece spindle, which rotates at an angular speed ω s, and moves along the positive or negative X-direction because the biconical optics possess different curvatures in X and Y directions. The diamond grinding …
Two BK-7 optical glass blanks were purchased, cut to the correct shape on a diamond saw, ground to size, and the 12" radius curves were diamond generated on one face, the other being flat. Tooling was made, in the form of a 12" radius (round) Pyrex grinding tool, an aluminum backing plate for the mirror blanks, and a 12" radius, 6 ...

He decided to machine generate the blanks the way professional optical fabricators do. His approach is simplicity itself and worth considering even if you're only going to make one or two mirrors. "It takes around 30 to 45 minutes to cut an f/4 curve in a 10-inch mirror and about the same amount of time to cut the corresponding curve on the ...

flow, either by manual grinding using shaped grinding tools, or by electro-grinding. (b) The internal surface of the cylinders of a car engine are turned on a lathe. The surface is then made smooth by grinding, followed by honing and lapping to get an extremely good, mirror-like finish. (c) Sand-paper is used to smooth a rough cut piece of wood. 2.

limitation to this method is that the generating tool must have a larger diameter than the radius of the optic being generated. Figure 2: Generation tool Unfortunately, both methods result in surface damage to the optic. Further grinding and polishing is then needed to smooth the surface to its final form. Lens processing capabilities of G&H include CNC generating, grinding, and polishing. We polish spherical, semi-spherical, and aspheric lenses. 5-axis grinding and polishing machines are utilized for manufacturing high precision aspheric surfaces on optical glass. Single point diamond turning is used for aspheric and diffractive optical elements.
You can see the "swirly" marks left by Newport's diamond generator. You need to grind with 25-micron until those are all gone, and then a little more to get rid of sub-surface damage. For this, I ground with about 25 to 35 pounds of weight added on top of the mirror, running the fixed-post grinding machine full out at 60 rpm's.
The method of both the surface grinding, or fining, and the polishing of a lens are accomplished on the same surfacing machine spindle, precisely reproducing the curvature and alignment from fining to polishing, thereby resulting in improved surface quality and optical properties. The fine grinding and polishing are accomplished using plain water by sequentially securing to and …
With the development of aerospace, military, medical, and 3C industries, the design of aspherical optical component has attracted more and more attention. As a substitute for the traditional manufacturing process for glass materials, the glass molding process (GMP) has the advantages of high forming accuracy, short production cycle, low cost, and non-pollution. …
